Carolien has dedicated over twenty years to defending clients in financial-economic criminal cases and large-scale general criminal investigations. Her approach is characterized by sharp analysis, legal creativity, and an intrinsic drive to achieve the best possible outcome. Clients praise her empathy and her attention to the person behind the case. Carolien is direct in her communication and diplomatic when necessary. She goes the extra mile for her clients but remains realistic at all times.
Carolien provides legal assistance in criminal, disciplinary, and professional misconduct proceedings. Her clientele includes corporations, administrative bodies, and healthcare institutions, as well as policymakers and other professionals such as medical doctors, accountants, and key figures from the business world, financial sector, real estate, and politics. Since its inception in 2015, Carolien has been a member of the National Police’s pool of defence attorneys. She has successfully represented dozens of police officers in investigations conducted by the Internal Investigations Department (VIK) and the Dutch National Criminal Investigation Department.
She also has extensive experience representing suspects and witnesses in investigations into (serious) workplace accidents, traffic incidents, and other types of accidents, which often lead to suspicions of criminal negligence or violations of occupational health and safety or traffic laws. Additionally, Carolien is specialized in criminal appeals before the Supreme Court.
Carolien studied criminal and civil law at the University of Groningen and spent a semester at the University of Wisconsin Law School (Madison, USA). She later earned a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Criminology from the University of Cambridge (UK). She worked for two years at the scientific bureau of the Dutch Supreme Court before beginning her career in criminal defence. Carolien has also taught at the universities of Groningen and Leiden and has been a long-standing lecturer in the continuing education program for lawyers.
She is a member of the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA), the Dutch Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (NVSA), and a board member of the Association of Supreme Court Criminal Lawyers (VCAS). Carolien has authored multiple publications.
