EU Sanctions Legislation
International sanctions are increasingly used to express a (political) judgment on global situations, with the EU being a frequent user of this legal tool. These EU sanctions (formally: restrictive measures) are applicable in the Netherlands.
The sanctions broadly cover trade sanctions and sanctions on (legal and private) entities.
Additionally, strict conditions govern the supply of goods with military applications or those with both civilian and military uses (dual-use goods); these export control rules are mandatory in the Netherlands.
Violating EU sanctions or export control rules constitutes a criminal offence under the Economic Offences Act (Wed).
This part of the law is highly complex.
